Learn More About the Duvall Concrete Floor Coating Installation Process
How Does Duvall Coating Solutions Install Your New Floors?
Before we begin the installation process, we start by prepping your floors to optimal adhesion. One of the most important steps in our process comes at the very beginning—prepping your garage, basement, or pool deck floors for application of our coating. Our preparation and installation processes ensure the best possible outcomes for your Northern Indiana or Chicagoland property.
Proper prep work ensures that your concrete is primed to receive an even coating that’ll adhere well and last for years to come.
How We Prepare Your Floors for the Best Coating Installation
1. Grind the Surface
We use a diamond-bit grinder to create a coarse, porous surface. Known as the latent layer, this is the weakest layer of concrete, and clearing it away makes for flawless coating application.
2. Control the Concrete Dust
When you’re working with concrete, dust is inevitable. Our grinders are fitted with high-powered vacuums to keep the area—and any of your nearby belongings—as clean as possible.
3. Eliminate Oils & Residue
Concrete can absorb oil, gasoline, and other heavy substances. Our grinding process removes all surface-level contaminants, and we use a degreaser to lift any deep-set stains.
4. Mend Any Defects
In the final step of our preparation process, we’ll fill in any pits or cracks in the surface of your concrete before we put down our first coating layer. This ensures you get the smoothest finish.

Polyaspartic Top Coat
Polyaspartic is the topcoat application for our concrete coatings. It’s a high-performance protective layer applied over our flake system to enhance durability, resistance, and appearance. This fast-curing coating offers superior abrasion, and chemical resistance, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like garages, patios, porches, basements and any other concrete walking spaces. It provides a smooth, glossy finish, enhances the color and sheen of the underlying flake. Polyaspartic is also known for its quick drying time, allowing for faster project completion.
Flake Layer
The flake layer is the perfect opportunity for property owners to showcase their personal style. With a wide variety of colors, sizes, and patterns to choose from, you can customize your garage floor to match your unique preferences and create a look that complements your space. It’s a decorative and protective finish applied to our polyaspartic floors, consisting of colorful, chip-like particles. These flakes are broadcast over the wet basecoat to create a textured, speckled appearance, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and durability of the floor. The flake layer helps to hide imperfections, adds slip resistance, and increases the overall strength of the surface, making it more resistant to wear, stains, and chemicals.
Polyurea Basecoat
The polyurea basecoat for our coatings is the foundational layer applied directly to the concrete floor, providing a strong, durable surface for additional coatings. It helps to seal the floor, improve adhesion, and prevent moisture from penetrating the concrete. The basecoat creates a smooth, even foundation, ensuring that subsequent layers, such as the flake or topcoat, bond effectively and perform optimally, enhancing the overall durability and appearance of the garage floor.
Prepped Concrete
The grinding process for concrete in our polyaspartic installation involves using specialized equipment to smooth and prepare the floor surface. This step removes imperfections, old coatings, and contaminants, creating a clean, roughened texture that ensures better adhesion for the process. Our process includes grinding with diamonds to level uneven areas, helping to bond securely and evenly, which is essential for a long-lasting, durable finish. This preparation is key to achieving a high-quality and professional-looking garage floor.
Our 1-Day Installation Process
Duvall Coating Solutions provides Northern Indiana and Chicago home and property owners with durable, impact-resistant, and slip-resistant floor coating systems designed to elevate and protect garage floors. Installed using commercial-grade materials by certified professionals, our garage floor coatings are built to withstand daily use and deliver long-lasting performance you can count on. Explore the details of our four-step installation process below.
Step 1: Basecoat
The transformation begins with the application of a high-quality, self-priming polyurea basecoat. This foundational layer is engineered to bond deeply with the concrete, creating a strong, uniform surface that supports long-term durability. Before applying the basecoat, we ensure the concrete is properly prepared and repaired, allowing the material to penetrate and cure correctly. This step sets the stage for a smooth, resilient flooring system that can withstand heavy use and extreme Midwest weather conditions.
Step 2: Dispersing the Chip
With the basecoat freshly applied, our team immediately disperses our decorative chips across the entire surface by hand. This method ensures precise control, giving every square inch even coverage and a consistent, attractive texture. The chips not only enhance the visual appeal of the floor but also add slip resistance and extra durability. We continue dispersing the chip until the floor reaches full saturation, creating the rich, dimensional look homeowners and business owners love. With 24 color options, you’ll find a design that’s perfect for your space.
Step 3: Scraping the Chip
After the chip layer has fully cured, we return to scrape the surface with specialized tools. This important step removes any loose, jagged, or vertically standing chips, leaving a level and uniform texture. We follow up with a thorough vacuuming to clear away all remaining debris. By smoothing the chip layer, we create an ideal canvas for the final clear coat, ensuring both comfort underfoot and a professional-quality finish.
Step 4: Clear Coat
To complete the installation, we apply a UV-stable polyaspartic clear coat that seals and protects the entire floor. This topcoat locks in the color and texture while delivering exceptional resistance to chemicals, abrasion, and UV exposure. Polyaspartic is known for its rapid curing time and long-term clarity, preventing yellowing and wear even under harsh sunlight. The result is a glossy, durable, and easy-to-clean surface that preserves its beauty for years to come.
